A Person Behind The Statistics:
-My time with the North Star Advocacy Center was a chaotic whirlwind. My life was flipped upside down in a matter of hours. Having to tell my darkest experiences to a complete stranger so they can help keep my children and I safe was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I had to talk about my abuse to the staff at the shelter, to police officers, a judge, and lawyers over and over again. Those strangers I took a leap of faith on to help me are now loved ones I cherish and could not imagine my life without. They are my family. In my darkest days and most insecure moments, the staff built me up. They helped me to see my worth and restore my confidence. The staff at the shelter always made sure my daughters and I were ok even years after we left the shelter. The shelter helped me leave my abuser and obtain an order of protection for myself and my children. They even helped me through a custody battle that would end up being years of horrible, unbelievable let downs and grief. The staff walked with me through EVERY painful step of me changing my life for the better. If they were unable to help me in any way, they always found a resource or recommendation of where to turn next. They were there for me when others didn’t know how to be. The shelter provided a support group, which I have made a few lifelong friends. We build each other up and fiercely believe in one another. After years and years of physical, mental, and sexual abuse, I retained my brain to think like a healthy individual. My time at the shelter was a whirlwind of change, a tragedy that brought much growth and change. Meeting the staff and working with them has been a blessing I will never take for granted.
